Have you ever noticed that as you age, time seems to accelerate at an exponential speed? No, I am not referring to Christmas shopping although that season tends to recur faster than most other events.
If you have children, I believe you know what I am talking about!
It only seems like yesterday when our youngest son was born – now he is officially an adult!!!
The emotions are mixed even though I have experienced this before.
However, this is different as he is the last to turn 18! On the one hand, he just turned 18 so that means that he is “evolving” into an adult yet on the other hand, I realized that my job as a parent has escalated to the next level of our relationship.
With the recent back-to-back weddings this past summer of two of the four boys and now this coming of age event, it will not be long before we become “empty nesters” or eventually (perhaps) “grandparents”!!!
I have always enjoyed the famous Bible verse for parents:
“Train up a child in the way that he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
The good Lord has allowed me the wisdom, strength, endurance, and grace to raise our boys yet in my heart, I feel that my job will never be done as a parent. I have made many mistakes (should have read the instruction manual on how to raise children) and have worried many times for their safety and whether we have done enough to prepare them to be on their own someday.
No use dwelling on the past as that chapter in my life has come and gone. Looking to the future, I will become the supposed “wise counselor” in their lives should they be open to receive my input. No matter how old they become, I will still be their father and they will always be my “kids”.
The great news is that I will hopefully be that future grandpa who will have loads of fun with his grandchildren before releasing them back to their parents, my sons. That will be another phase of parenting to look forward to.
All in all, I consider it a joy and a blessing to be entrusted with these young lives throughout the many years of teaching, discipline, and love. What awaits me next is going to be another wonderful journey!!!
Surely, it is the beginning of a new age!!!
